John Cornyn 07_21_06 Bandwidth and Net Neutrality.
It is important that cable companies are not allowed to F(oul) up the internet while providing V(oice) O(ver) I(nternet) P(rotocol) - VOIP. Vonage is a company that is involved. Without being too technical, I'll have to be technical. DSL (telephone internet) and FIOS (fibre [sic] opticl [sic] internet) can carry packets too [sic] near full capacity without packet collisions because of the way they work. Cable has packet collisions at 50% capacity, because the timing of packet launching is random. What lobbyists are trying to do, is devise a wedge issue, by "offering" priority traffic for voice - if you pay more. Cable lobbyists should not be allowed to foul up the entire interent, just because their technology is inferior. Make them run fibre, like Verizon and AT&T. I just wanted you to have information, so the lobbyists couldn't pull the wool over your eyes. Yours Sincerely, *News from 1/17/08 has a link that says this issue is still controversial. By my logic, if I pay for 2.5 MBPS all month, I OUGHT to be allowed to download at 2.5KBPS ALL MONTH LONG. Canada has it figured out as does Japan - fiber optic ALL THE WAY!!! (OK at least the backbone ought to be fiber.)
