Mel Gibson 12_15_07 On How Hollywood can make a buck.
Mr. Mel Gibson C/o Staff Member Icon Productions 808 Wilshire Blvd Fl 4 Santa Monica, Ca 90401 Robert Johnson 12.15.2007 Dear Mr. Gibson: I am sure that Icon Productions takes an interest in new technologies that affect the film industry. A Hologram, as you may know, is the product of a laser light shining through an interference pattern in a piece of film. You will be able to verify that we are now able to generate Red, Green and Blue lasers easily. As such, color holograms should be a doable way to make the film experience more present. The major problem for a color holographic movie is not the projection, which is theoretically accomplished with a laser lit version of our current projector, but rather the capturing of the images. I have been contemplating the projection aspect, and wondering if an LCD crystal, such as projects our current HDTV image could be modified to generate a laser interference pattern and make a digital version of holographic projection possible. If so, the holographic movie would be in my living room soon after it hit theaters. You are in a position to seek out engineers and companies interested in promoting such an idea, and investigating how practical it could be made in application. If you are the Production studio "starting the dance," you are in a position to pioneer and practice the difficult business of capturing three-d holographic motion picture. Truth to be told, I expect it to be a somewhat "tough nut to crack." Although I am a Protestant, I have always appreciated your accomplishment in brining [sic _bringing_] "The Passion" to the silver screen. I hope this idea will be of use to you. Yours Sincerely, Robert Johnson CC: Central Intelligence Agency Office of Public Affairs Washington, D.C. 20505
